[SOLVED] no audio input - logitech c615 webcam

Trying to get audio recording to work with a Logitech c615 webcam on LM 17. The video (through Cheese and guvcview) works fine, simply the sound doesn't. I've check the ALSA mixer settings (to the all-time of my abilities):

ALSA capture settings
ALSA capture settings

aught suspicious seems to exist muted. In case anyone was going to bespeak it out, I've too switched the ALSA input settings to "rear mic" and "line" to no avail. The system sound settings show no input device available:

no sound input
no audio input

I haven't mucked virtually much with audio stuff in Linux so I'm unsure what my side by side stride should be. Whatever help is profoundly appreciated.

The alsamixer will not provide a solution for you. The C615 is reported to work out of the box.

You did non mention which desktop environment you are using and then all I can do is to advise you what you should do in Cinnamon.
Left click on the loudspeaker icon on the panel then click on "Output Device" and make your selection (i that works). Do all other sounds work?
If you do not take a loudspeaker icon on the panel so open "Applets" and actuate it.

You could too try to plug your webcam into another usb port.

Cheers for the response, and I am using Cinnamon. To be clear, I don't have difficulty with other sound - playback of all audio works just fine. The difficulty is that I take no device listed under "input" to select for recording audio. Irresolute the USB port did not help.

What output do you get from "lsusb" - look for the entry prefixed by 046d which identifies logitech products?

The plan "guvcview" has a facility for turning audio on/off. Consider installing information technology.

Yeah, I saw that post when I was Googling around for info.

"lsusb" output:

Bus 002 Device 002: ID 8087:8000 Intel Corp.
Autobus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Autobus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:8008 Intel Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Motorcoach 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation three.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 009: ID 1004:631c LG Electronics, Inc.
Double-decker 003 Device 010: ID 046d:082c Logitech, Inc.
Bus 003 Device 005: ID 04d9:2013 Holtek Semiconductor, Inc. Keyboard [Das Keyboard]
Bus 003 Device 004: ID 1532:0007 Razer USA, Ltd DeathAdder Mouse
Coach 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Seems like information technology's recognizing the device (I suppose it must, since I can view and tape video) but I nonetheless have no audio input device to select in the system settings, and no input selection in guvcview produces audio.

I take just checked a spare laptop and the input tab lists 2 inputs - inbuilt webcam and built-in Sound.

Your epitome of the Alsamixer merely shows the "Capture" field. Use F3 to see "Playback" or F5 to meet "All". What does F6 tell you?

You may take to consider removing ALSA and re-installing information technology (sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-audio-base of operations alsa-base alsa-utils) then re-install all removed packages.

Before you do that, if you have a headset, plug information technology in and meet if the input changes.

By the fashion, overnice keyboard.

Your paradigm of the Alsamixer only shows the "Capture" field. Utilise F3 to run into "Playback" or F5 to run across "All". What does F6 tell you?

You may take to consider removing ALSA and re-installing it (sudo apt-become --purge remove linux-sound-base of operations alsa-base alsa-utils) then re-install all removed packages.

Before y'all do that, if you lot have a headset, plug information technology in and come across if the input changes.

By the way, nice keyboard.

Here's the (almost) full ALSA mixer info:

alsa_mixer_full.png

The NVidia device has no audio input, and so this is the merely mixer that should be making whatsoever difference. Plugging in a headset to the front sound panel creates a Microphone entry in Audio > Inputs, and recording through that headset works. Just seems like the webcam'due south microphone is not being registered by the system. Do y'all recollect reinstalling ALSA is the way to go?

P.S. Thanks - I used to take the blank-primal version, only my girlfriend e'er had such a hard time logging into her email using information technology that I ended upwards buying the labeled ane. If it lasts as long as the sometime IBM Model Ms did, I'll be happy every bit a clam.

Before removing and afterwards re-installing ALSA which should be the terminal resort, I would endeavour substituting another webcam to eliminate the possibility of a faulty product.

I see that ALSA does not even list the sound part of your webcam - and information technology should. I have a Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 which is displayed in alsamixer via F6. At that place is nothing configurable at that place but information technology is at to the lowest degree displayed and it also shows upward in the Sound Settings applet.

I see that ALSA does not fifty-fifty list the sound office of your webcam - and information technology should. I have a Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 which is displayed in alsamixer via F6. There is nix configurable in that location but it is at least displayed and it too shows upwardly in the Sound Settings applet.

Thanks, I don't have another webcam handy simply I have already tested that possibility by booting instead into Windows, where everything works as expected. Is reinstalling ALSA a headache? Thanks for the input.

No, it is not difficult. The lawmaking I quoted should do the task. So reboot and

Code: Select all

                  sudo apt-get install linux-sound-base of operations alsa-base alsa-utils

should get you back to sound. Hopefully your webcam audio will work.

Alas (or should I say ALSA?), I have washed every bit you lot described and I am even so without sound. Nonetheless no input device listed in the sound applet, and no boosted device using F6 in alsamixer. WOE IS ME.

Thank you for the suggestion, but information technology looks like no-go:

pulse_audio_control.png

All three ports (line, front and rear mics) show "unplugged" as their status. I don't fifty-fifty know whether the USB microphone would be considered i of those - my intuition would be that those refer to analog sound inputs, non those carried past USB.

I did some reading this morning and noticed that the URL regarding the C615 working in Ubuntu was a few years erstwhile which led me to thinking near the kernel. I loaded a xiv.04 version of Ubuntu which turned out to be the aforementioned kernel version as that used in Linux Mint 17 (three.13.0-24).
If you have any other distros available, it would be an interesting experiment to see if they can produce sound with the webcam or evidence an input - in which case this can be classified as a kernel result.

The simply other control that may be worth trying is "sudo alsa force-reload".

In alsamixer I have "default" listed equally the sound card of selection.

Until there is a satisfactory fix, 1 temporary remedy may be to utilise an external microphone. Some other may be to expect a kernel update or an alsa update. The electric current kernel is 3.15 but not yet bachelor in the Linux Mint repositories.

I don't know why I hadn't thought of trying a different kernel. I'll load one of the mainline builds old today and run across whether it affects it at all, and report back. Again, many thanks for your help.

EDIT: Updated to the mainline three.xv.3 kernel and the webcam now appears with model-specific characterization in guvcview, and audio recording works. Many thanks once again, kyphi, for your suggestions.
